With our photo contest deadline approaching, we decided to use the contest theme “Color and Light” as the inspiration for this week’s questions. Have you entered yet? There’s still time — the winning photo will be printed, made into a poster-sized print, framed, and delivered to the winner. If you need another reason to enter the contest, it was pointed out that there are 10 Saturdays until Christmas. You could spend some of them taking photos instead of shopping. Curious about this week’s questions and discussions?

Cirque du Soleil’s “Amaluna” has been in Minneapolis.

This company is known for their creative, colorful, and daring innovation. Ever wonder what their secret is? It all begins when Daniel Lammare and Guy LaLiberte (founder and artistic director respectively) define the show’s theme using a broad vision, sometimes as simple as a single word. They consider brainstorming ineffective, instead using honesty and judgment to explore ideas — and in doing so, they cultivate good ideas and eliminate bad ones. Then, as a show develops, they look what isn’t working and let the troupe find solutions.

In 1951, “I Love Lucy” premiered — it would make Lucille Ball a much-loved icon. That famous red head is also a great example of branding. What other personal traits have become brands?
Lucy and her antics were consistent and helped people come to know and love her character and the show. Famous people like Steve Jobs and Martha Stewart who have used who they are to make a name for themselves are worth learning from. And, now many people are using social media to create a personal brand. Doing so increases their visibility and helps customers and others know what to expect.

How does color affect your choices?
Pro Litho Creative’s offices are getting a new look — we have a bright red wall. Step one in a bigger plan for the look of our space. Color is a key part of our branding. According to the Color Emotion Guide, our red wall will spark feelings of boldness, excitement, and youth. There may be something to that. You can’t help but feel energized when you round the corner and see that big burst of red.

Our contest theme is “Color and Light.” What is your best tip for using light in your photos?
This article had lots of great DIY tips for creative lighting — the homemade aluminum foil reflector was definitely intriguing. You could channel your inner MacGuyver and add sparkles with just a simple reflector.
