Margaret Bourke-White was a woman of many firsts — and as she began her career, photojournalism was just developing. Her camera turned her into a storyteller and a pioneer. “Nothing attracts me like a closed door,” she said. “I cannot let my camera rest until I have pried it open.” In Portrait of Myself, she wrote this about her work: “The very secret of life for me, I believed was to maintain in the midst of rushing events an inner tranquility.”
