The sky was a playground for light and color last night and the world outside the office windows is alive with freshly-mown grass, steak on the grill, and lavender blooms. Sampling summer is an excellent way to revive both creativity and productivity. Our Twitter and Facebook streams was a lot about July and holidays, as well as a little bit about a cool app that makes typing feel like playtime.

Do you have anything fun planned for July?

Ah … the midpoint of summer vacation. For some, this month represents freedom and we celebrate it in numerous ways —vacation, dining al fresco, and celebrating our country’s heritage. The summer months are a great time to explore work-life balance — author Nigel Marsh’s TED talk explored our responsibility for making work and life work well together. He took a year off of work to spend with his family and since has returned to work to explore how to make sure one’s life is well lived.

Do you Swype?

This quirky way of typing isn’t available for Mac folks just yet. It looks fun, even if this blogger can’t quite figure out why or how it works so well.

What are your plans for the 4th?

Here’s hoping you had a day that involved fun and whatever it was you needed. If you missed it — perhaps taking time to celebrate with a summery pie or you could grill out. Epicurious has a recipe that they claim is the only marinade you will ever need. Report in if you try it — “only marinade you’ll ever need” is high praise!

What do you know about the history of Independence Day?

Most people know that it is all about America and freedom and they don their finest stars-and-stripes themed gear. But, Nathaniel Philbrick’s Bunker Hill gives a sense of what happened for those who fought for that freedom. Interesting to dive into our past.
